Have any of you done it?
I just got an email from BMW who apparently had a set up with a PlayStation with a VR headset running Grand Tourismo at the consumer electronics show. They took the top five fastest virtual racers out for a real life HPDE in an M4 on a real track. (Whoever came up with this marketing gimmick is a genius btw.)
Anyway, I thought that VR setup sounded either really cool or a quick way to barf all over yourself. I feel like it’s not going to be a so-so experience.
I’ve got a PlayStation and the game. The headset from PlayStation is $230 which is a lot of money if it’s less than a great experience.
I’ve also got an Xbox and Forza 7 but I don’t see a VR headset directly branded as Xbox. I’m open to suggestions if anyone has a setup that they love but I’d rather get branded stuff that works rather than cobble together a setup of unknown quality.
Anyone try this yet? Or am I the monkey who is going to have to launch himself into space and let you know how it goes?

I fooled around with a VR iRacing setup for about an hour and it is amazing. You are simply more aware of what is going on around you than with a monitor setup. I didn’t play long enough to notice but people I know who race in VR say it is almost impossible to go back to monitors.

I looked into it when the PS4 headset was on sale around Black Friday. Do some Googling, I’m pretty sure there’s limited game modes/use of the VR headset with GT, which ultimately steered (yay puns) me away from purchasing.
Project Cars/other PC sims may have more thorough VR support (pretty sure they do), but price of entry (decent PC and headset) is higher than console.

My brother has an Oculus Rift and we loaded up my copy of Assetto Corsa on Steam—paired with my Thrustmaster wheel and pedals, it’s one of the most immersive gaming experiences I’ve encountered. I can’t speak much to how it might impact lap times (positively or negatively) because I hadn’t logged much time with those controls even without the headset, but man did I want to sink hours at a time into that game.
Everything simply feels a little more realistic by virtue of you being able to glance around the car’s interior, naturally look ahead into corners, and force-feedback from the steering wheel doesn’t hurt, either. The two downsides are cost, of course, and (at least on a PC) a substantial amount of setup headaches and such. I don’t think the gaming/computer industry has yet crafted a clean way to transition from opening programs or operating menus with a keyboard/mouse to “okay, the game’s loaded, put the VR headset on.” No one yet does the “Please put on your 3D glasses now”-style prompt in games, that I’m aware.

Sadly GT Sport relegates VR to a specific mode of the game. I think it’s limited to you and one other car on track at a time. :/
If you could use VR throughout the entire game I think I would own a VR headset right now.

I race in a group where a few people do most races in VR. It was agrivate an already building headache for sure, but like other’s mention, you’re much more aware, able to peek towards the apex, probably have a better feeling of where you have/are putting the car. I think the general idea is that with VR you can really get close to walls/apexes so it’s good for a second or 2 for those guys in some cases.

It’s weird living in an age where I feel most of my typos are done by the software keeping me from making typos.

I’ve played both project cars and assetto corsa on PC with VR. Both were amazing, though i hugely prefer Assetto Corsa’s physics.
You look in to corners, its amazing.
